CV Format
CV format is an important area of CV writing and is often overlooked by jobseekers. There are two common CV formats generally used which are outlined below.
CV Format – Chronological CV Format
The chronological CV is the most popular CV format and widely used in Ireland. This format has work experience arranged with most recent experience listed first. Recruiters normally expect this CV format and they are comfortable reading it. The key disadvantage of this CV format is that it focuses on facts and dates with little emphasis competencies or abilities. It limits jobseekers especially when most recent work experience is not relevant to potential employers. Chronological CV’s highlight gaps in employment and frequent changes in jobs. A chronological CV works well when your experience and qualifications are relevant. It works well when you have no gaps in the CV and have not regularly switched jobs.
CV Format – Functional CV Format
Functional CV’s dissect your experience into functional exposure – like IT experience or Sales experience. This CV format is very beneficial when you have changed jobs frequently after short periods of time or you have gaps in employment or if you have it is also an effective CV format if your recent work experience is not relevant to the role that you are applying for. The major problem with this CV format is that it can create suspicion from the recruiter. This format can frustrate recruiters in that it is more difficult to get the key information they need.
