CV format is an important area of CV writing and often overlooked by job seekers. There are 2 common CV formats outlined below.
Chronological CV
The chronological CV is the most popular CV format and widely used in Ireland. This format has work experience arranged with most recent experience listed first. Recruiters normally expect this CV format and they are comfortable reading it. The key disadvantage of this CV format is that it focuses on facts/dates and not competencies/abilities. It limits job seekers when the most recent work experience is not relevant. Chronological CVs highlight gaps in employment and frequent changes in jobs. A chronological CV works well when your experience and qualifications are relevant. It works well when you have no gaps in the CV and have not regularly switched jobs.
Functional CV
Functional CVs dissect your experience into functional exposure – like IT experience or Sales experience. This format is very beneficial when you have changed jobs frequently or you have gaps in employment. It is also an effective format if your recent work experience is not relevant to the role that you are applying for. The major problem with this CV format is that it can create suspicion from the recruiter. This format can frustrate recruiters because it is more difficult to get the key information they need.
